How do I know if my engine is Commander or Champion ?

The easy way to tell if you have a Commander or Champion 6 cylinder engine is by the manifold.  If you have a two-piece manifold you have a Flathead Commander 'Big 6' engine.  If you have a one-piece then it is a Champion Flat head 6 cylinder

Where can I find the engine block number ?

On the 6 cylinders the engine number for identification purposes is located at the front left upper section on the block.  Right under the head.

On the V8 engines (back to 1955) the number for identification purposes is located on the left forward most part of the block (right forward of the valley cover) and the machined area has the engine number.  The raised numbers are casting numbers and do not tell you the engine number.
